While I have tried to teach you many techniques and ideas and rules… these are 10 that I personally feel are ESSENTIAL to put into your practice. Thank you Sister Mary Corita Kent for the guidance.
We are going to CRITIQUE and REFLECT and SURVEY in all the classes. I hope that this final semester was fulfilling and productive for you all.
Please keep in mind the 7 parts of our standards and how you have been aware and practicing them. These are how we, as artists, continue to become stronger artists in our studios and our practices – no matter what we do are where they are.

What can we say about the rest of the year. Below I will simply tell you what is on the horizon. That is all. Thank you for the INCREDIBLE WORK this year. The struggles in art are real BUT… it is all about showing up and getting the work done. Rule #7 is a FOCAL POINT of it ALL – The ONLY rule is WORK!
Advanced Digital Art and Photography: Handbook Cover Design – then we finish the PHOTO BOOKS
HANDBOOK COVER – this week we are cranking up our working habits and pushing to a fast deadline – welcome to the world of graphic design and deadlines – HARD AND FAST DEADLINES.
It feels lik eMondrian made a huge impact on the DESIGN WORLD as well as the painting world.
HERE is the larger Photography Book assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas.
Art Foundations: Collage (and Poetry)
We are beginning to work on our COLLAGES! This is a FUN activity that allows one to play with the SPACE and FORM in a way that is loose and free (or tight and specific). Let’s learn about Romare Bearden and Della Wells in the process.
Thank you Della Wells for filling the space with SO MUCH to look at and take in. Collage and CONTEXT!
The making of one’s own hand bound book can be a lot of fun and very rewarding so… be attentive to the process we are going to be teaching and work at making this a worthwhile project.
Watercolor or drawing paper is up to you.
Intro to Digital Art and Photography: MONEY comes next… I mean LOGO Design Comes Next!
LOGO Design is the final project. We are finishing this up and presenting on WEDNESDAY. What to do with the remainder of the year? We will find out soon.
Some online artist selling their fast and fast logos… It is NOT that easy… But good on them for making money and a living. Gotta hustle!
What FRUSTRATES me about the idea of ONLINE LOGO DESIGN services is that they make it seem so instant, so easy. The REAL design takes time and thought and introspection as well as revision and revision and revision… It takes an ARTIST to do the work. This is not STRONG logo design… your designs are!
Just so you are aware… the process of the figurative work has taken a lot longer than anticipated and we are going to continue this through the rest of the term. The figure is HARD. The canvases we built were CHALLENGING and the ideas that you are communicating are PERSONAL.
Make USE of the class period and studio time.
NO EXCUSES!
Doron Langburg “Daniel Reading” 2019
Last week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast deals specifically with an exhibition about the figure and HERE IT IS! Remember that we are listening and seeing artwork that is dealing with contemporary issues and you are in the Advanced levels of making art.

We are not in LIVERPOOL but… look at how the Mondrian Approach can be used!
While we do not live in Liverpool, the ideas of a layout are consistent wherever you live. Are you working:

Logo Design this week That is what we are doing. What are your initial sketches?
Let’s look at the ideas that Paul Rand has about the creation of a strong logo and continue from there.
Paul Rand’s most famous and lasting designs (some of them)
โA logo derives meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around.โ
โThe only mandate in logo design is that they be distinctive, memorable and clear.โ
โPresentation is key.โ
โSimplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.โ
LOGO Design is next and we have a commission – this is a first. If you are interested in earning $40 – put your best foot forward (and I will try to get a little more out of the deal for 2nd and 3rd place).
What have you begun with the figurative work? This is the most challenging genre to work with – the figure. We all have one. We have all drawn / painted one. We know when things look right and we know when things look wrong. Make use of your time… we have about 5 sessions left with one another… make good use of the time.
Do you want something to listen to? This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast deals specifically with an exhibition about the figure and HERE IT IS! Remember that we are listening and seeing artwork that is dealing with contemporary issues and you are in the Advanced levels of making art.

Advanced Digital Art and Photography: Books and InDesign – Let’s look at the process of BUILDING our books.
How is your PLANNING on the construction of the BOOKS and the LAYOUT working? Have you thought about:
Page Numbers?
Titles (front of book and pages)?
Name on the pages?
Use of MASTER (Parent) Pages and then the pages in the body of the book?
Not Exactly a BOOK per say buy Marcel Duchamp went through the layout of miniature works of his in a similar fashion and created a BOX SET of these pieces. What do you see him having done to make sure the LAYOUT was unified throughout? And he DIDN’T have InDesign to work with.
HERE is the larger photography assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas.
Art Foundations: The Still Life and the Critique! Welcome to the final artworks!
Today we are CRITIQUING and then we are working into the ideas of METALS!

Intro to Painting: The LANDSCAPE and WATERCOLORS! Time for a WALKING FIELD TRIP – Make sure you bring a coat – it might be cold!
We experimented with watercolors to review the TECHNIQUES we learned as Art Foundations artists… This week we are going to go outside and 1) DRAW a tree and then 2) Paint a tree. The most important part of this is the LOOKING at the tree and working from that OBSERVATION. Outside Tuesday to draw and paint and then on THURSDAY to make photographs to develop our compositions. Dress appropriately!
Intro to Digital Art and Photography: We are WRAPPING up the Literature work this week and then onto the idea of TEXT and LOGOS – this is a paid competition this time… MONEY!

Advanced Painting: Do you have your unique shapes drawn for your canvases?
FINAL 2 DAYS TO PAINT on your Narrative Painting Assignment with Mark Tansey as an impetus – look at the REALISM! We are going to work in OILS when we get back.
Set your paintings up in the front of the classroom on the 6 easels and let’s take 5 minutes to look at them from afar. What stands out as needing work. What stands out as being successful. Stick notes in hand – write out a SOLID POSITIVE and CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT for each work.
From here we will be painting. How about the unique canvas shapes you have drawn? We are going to be MEASURING and SCALING THINGS UP as well as reading angles so… be prepared to do some geometry and algebra!
And this is where we are headed… Figurative Art! Be ready to PLAN and PAINT. BE PREPARED TO WORK! PLAN PLAN PLAN!
HERE is the assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas. Make sure you have all of your photographs from last time in hand and ready to 1) edit in Photoshop and 2) insert into Adobe InDesign. This is a series of works you are going to have to create MOSTLY outside of class and then edit mostly INSIDE of class – so BALANCE your time wisely. We have 3 more weeks on this entire work so be ready to WORK!
Art Foundations: The Still Life and Mark Making – Let’s look at a variety of ways to make marks.
Mr. Korb’s CLOSED COMPOSITION… you are doing an OPEN COMPOSITION. How is that DIFFERENT?
NARRATIVE PAINTING ASSIGNMENT – Grimm’s Fairy Tales – Let’s Use THIS link and you can choose your own Fairy Tale. Think about the imagery that comes to mind and work up a FEW sketches so you are READY TO ROLL with the painting when we come back.
Intro to Digital Art and Photography: Time to CRITIQUE and then Print. Thank you for all the hard work… NEXT UP… Wait for it… Literature!
WORK OF ART – Judge a Book by its Cover – This is the first 45 minutes of our day two class so bring a snack! – Give me a moment to get this up to speed…
What LITERATURE have you brought to work on? We are going to look at and share the ideas of the works of art with Mr. Korb as we begin. HOWEVER… let’s be inspred for 40 minutes by artists who are making art for a BOOK COVER. Pay attention to those who have READ THE BOOKS and those who have NOT READ THE BOOKS (prepared and not prepared). I want YOU to be prepared.
LITERATURE ASSIGNMENT – This is where we are headed next. I want you to think about the necessity of LITERATURE in life. You are choosing the work to illustrate and you are going to choose to see how you choose to do that illustration. KNOW that you will have some text worked into the piece BUT… it is not something that has to look like a page from a book… We will talk more about this later. First let’s critique.
Advanced Digital Art and Photography: RUBRIC and Portraits – BE READY TO THINK!
Mike Bailey-Gates: We have a GREAT number of portrait photographers out there… you are one of them. Let us see how we can push your skills at thinking about and setting up the idea of a strong portrait. THESE ARE NOT SNAPCHAT or SNAPSHOTS!
HERE is the assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas. There is a lot to learn. The Poster Assignment. I feel as though we have a RUBRIC coming up…
Art Foundations: The Still Life and Mark Making – Let’s look at a variety of ways to make marks.
2 point perspective – Disney storyboard… There is a career out there if you can get a strong understanding of the ideas of perspective.
What are your thoughts going to be about the still life you are going to be making? We are also going to look at the ideas of MARK MAKING!
Intro to Painting: Narrative ACRYLIC Paintings are moving along and we are critiquing – mid critiquing…
What are the strengths of the piece?
Where are you still struggling with your painting?
What is the FOCAL POINT and how are you using the composition to draw the viewers eyes around the composition.
NEXT TIME… This is important to think about as we begin our last days of working.
Focal Point – where do your eyes go first?
Contrast – is there a good sense of light versus dark? Smooth versus textured?
Are your marks specific and intentional?
Flip it upside down and step backโฆ what seems wrong? What stands out?
Finally – look at the edges of the picture plane and make sure that you are dealing with the edge, the corners, the sides?
Intro to Digital Art and Photography: Time to CRITIQUE and then Print. Thank you for all the hard work… NEXT UP… Wait for it… Literature!

Here in an illustration inspired by Mo Willems… What are you going to do with the upcoming assignment.
Make sure you consider your choice of literature? What is literature for you? We will go over the assignment first thing day one. Make sure you take the time to THINK ABOUT WHAT LITERATURE IS and how you can be inspired by it.
Thank you to everyone for giving me the confidence that the week will go by swimmingly. I have faith that the efforts in EVERYONE’S hands will be to create and work to the best of one’s ability and to be FOCUSED 98% of the time… (c’mon – I am not inflexible).
I had a GREAT time at ExpoChicago on Saturday and made a few videos to help you see how what WE do in the studio is based a lot on what is being done in art history (yes) but also in the world of CONTEMPORARY ART. (1,000,000 KORB Points for the first one to comment on what CONTEMPORARY means).
Below I have the videos and images for the ENTIRE WEEK so… if you want to see my inspiring words all at once – go ahead and binge the videos for your entire week… otherwise check them out as they drop in Google Classroom. (If you are NOT in my Google Classrooms and are a dedicated follower – BINGE AWAY.)

Get yourself in as often as possible this week to get our paintings begun. Think about the techniques that we are learning about and asking you to experience. These are important skills that need to be used in the process. MAKE SURE YOU ARE EXPERIMENTING and EXPLORING the techniques.
Advanced Digital Art and Photography: Poster Design! What can you make a poster about? Let’s talk DESIGN APPROACHES as well.
What is your style. what is your inspiration in the design of the poster? These are all questions that are important for you to consider as you are moving forward in the process.
HERE is the assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas. There is a lot to learn.
Art Foundations: Drawing: Positive and Negative Space, Values, Texture, and Mark Making
We are learning a lot of techniques with this artwork. Make sure that you are paying attention to the process and the steps we go through to learn about them. More importantly… we are learning a lot about what we can do in the future with our artwork that we will put into use down the road.
Positive and Negative Space – This is where we are going to start!
What is your composition about? How are you communicating that message in the composition (and what is strong about your composition AND what is the composition style you are choosing to work with)? Make sure you are paying close attention to this as you move forward… Sketch the imagery out and make good use of the entire picture plane… how are you filling the space? How are you using the space to tell a story, create the composition?
