IND. Adv. Painters – The Two Of You!

Look at YESTERDAY’S POST and check it out. RESEARCH IS ON YOUR OWN. Below is a slideshow of my day at the Milwaukee Art Museum and I mad pictures of FIGURATIVE ART for you to explore. Enjoy!

Art Foundations: Intro to Photoshop and Portraits (x2)

  • G: 3.1P: Apply relevant criteria from traditional and contemporary cultural contexts to examine, reflect on, and plan revisions for works of art and design in progress.
  • A: What did you write down as the GOAL or the thing you were going to begin with today?
    • Share that with your classmate and then get to work in PHOTOSHOP. This is the LAST DAY to work.
      • The images will be 8โ€ x 10โ€ or 10โ€ x 8โ€ and at a resolution of 300ppi.
  • G: Did you hand it in through the Google Classroom as a JPEG? Is it 300ppi? Is it 8″ x 10″ or 10″ x 8″? These minor details are important so that I can print the image up smoothly and easily. Make sure that you named it with your name as part of the title so that it is easy for me to identify.
That is a PHOTOSHOP IMAGE! Woo!

Intro to Digital Art: Photoshop Portraits

What are your thoughts about this faceted Portrait? How’d they do it?
https://tutvid.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/low-poly-thumbnail-new.jpg

Please let me know what artwork you are submitting for the Mary Horde Art show in this Spreadsheet and make SURE you have your art here and to me on FRIDAY!

  • G: 1.1Ac: Individually or collaboratively formulate new creative problems based on studentโ€™s existing artwork.
  • A: What is so special about the photo you created last time that is making this portrait so interesting?
    • We will have gone over some of the tools that you might have thought of using (brushed, pencils, erasers) but what else can you use in Photoshop to create a drawing?
    • LAYERS are important here and I hope that you are using them.
    • This project WILL be printed in FULL COLOR. Make your resolution 300 dpi.
    • Continue to work with the self – portrait from last time in Adobe Photoshop. What are you taking away from the process of using PHOTOSHOP rather than ILLUSTRATOR to draw?
  • When you come in the time after next… you need to have 5 thumbnails AND the work of โ€œLiteratureโ€ with you. If you DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING WITH YOU, I will supply you with a work from your English Class (which is fine if youโ€™d like by the way, you are reading it in class).
I wish he had a body… but this is a great start!

Advanced Digital Art: Magazine Layout – Cover and Double Page Spread

Please let me know what artwork you are submitting for the Mary Horde Art show in this Spreadsheet and make SURE you have your art here and to me on FRIDAY!

  • G: 6.1Ac: Make, explain, and justify connections between artists or artwork and social, cultural, and political history.
  • 8.1Ac: Identify types of contextual information useful in the process of constructing interpretations of an artwork or collection of works.
  • A: Sit down for 7 minutes and write – just freehand write about yourself and your artist journey – what has it been? What do you enjoy doing / making / seeing / creating in  your art? What OTHER things are influencing you as you make your work? Do you have anything beyond the classroom that influences you?
  • G: What sort of writing were you able to come up with today? What images have you gathered in the process of your research today? What magazine cover styles have your looked at? What page layouts have you considered? What are you going to do to create a QUALITY page layout and then an article / magazine cover for yourself? This is a challenge that will be worth your while.
  • BIG HUGE NOTE: Create a gathering of 5 – 10 page layouts from ONLINE RESEARCH and insert them into a GOOGLE DOCUMENT – and then HAND IT IN THROUGH GOOGLE CLASSROOM. This is DUE at the end of the class period today – it will keep you on task.

Advanced Painting: Figurative Art – RESEARCH!

Please let me know what artwork you are submitting for the Mary Horde Art show in this Spreadsheet and make SURE you have your art here and to me on FRIDAY!

  • G: 7.1Ac: Recognize and describe personal aesthetic and empathetic responses to the natural world and constructed environments.
  • 10.1Ac: Utilize inquiry methods of observation, research, and experimentation to explore unfamiliar subjects through art-making.
  • A: What are your plans and who is inspiring you in the process. The ideas for your artwork WILL be ready to go the next time we meet – you WILL be presenting your ideas to me and then begin painting / drawing it out. We have 3 weeks to complete this artwork so we can move on. Reference materials – photographs, writings, planning – all of that will be ready to go for next block.
  • HUGE NOTE: Please take the time to read over the following EDITORIAL article about 20 Female Artists who Are Pushing Figurative Painting Forward during class and at your own pace. Advanced Painting… Remember that this is SOLID CONTEMPORARY WORK! https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-these-20-female-artists-are-pushing-figurative-painting-forward
  • ALSO – Do you HAVE TO GO ABSTRACT? No! Some like that – some donโ€™t. This is YOUR idea, your plans, your work.
  • G: Research online, in your sketchbook – donโ€™t forget to think scale. The ONLY guideline that I am HOLDING you to is that the work if FIGURATIVE in nature (based on and observed from a real person – whole figure – or most of – NOT A PORTRAIT) and the rest is up to you. It is IMPORTANT that you are exposed to the idea of working from a figure. Make DARN SURE you are ready to go next time. Images, Photographs, Sketched, Materials, Canvas BUILT!

#69: Color is not Neutral: It has an emotional component. Certain colors have specific associations and induce certain responses. Learn what they are. When you use color, try to determine and understand the accompanying emotional response and how to use it effectively. Color has a visceral impact. Kit White 101 Things I Learned in Art School

CHAPERONES NEEDED FOR FIELD TRIP… Any PARENTS who’d like to go to the Milwaukee Art Museum?

Art Foundations: Digital Images in Photoshop!

  • G: 3.1P: Apply relevant criteria from traditional and contemporary cultural contexts to examine, reflect on, and plan revisions for works of art and design in progress.
  • A: What have you accomplished SO far in the process of the DIGITAL Art that you are making? Give 3 examples of EXCITING NEW discoveries that you have come up with or run across. What is ONE thing that has challenged you with the digital world (this might be MORE important than the successes to look at).
  • G: Next block is the LAST day to work on RESOLVING your TWO images. Make sure that you are utilizing the time well. What is the one thing that you are going to be FOCUSED ON? Write it out and put it in your handbook so you remember.

  • G: 1.2Ac: Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic practices to plan works of art and design.
  • A: Looking at the canvases that we have ready for us… what scale, size, position, plans are you going to work at in your portrait. If you arenโ€™t ready – I will be giving you a portrait of yourself to use.
  • G: We looked at the process of the canvas building – think about the scale that you are going to be using. What scale, position, proportion, inspiration are you going to be thinking about in regards to the portrait? The PRELIMINARY DRAWINGS and PLANNING must get done so that you are ready to build next time and painting over BREAK. Consider the idea of coming

Advanced Painting: Critique Today!

  • 3.1Ac: Engage in constructive critique with peers, then reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art and design in response to personal artistic vision.
  • A: Thinking about the work that you have completed over the past number of weeks or so, what are the struggles you had with the process? What were the successes that you had with the work? What are you most pleased / surprised / struggled) with? Take a few minutes – 5 – to talk with and make up a list with a friend / buddy / stranger to talk about the work and come up with 3 strong talking points – Process / Tools, Successes, Struggles. Then please come up with a question that you would like to ask another artist about their work.
  • Next time we will be working FIGURATIVE IDEAS and some RESEARCH on your own… We will be meeting in the DIGITAL LAB so that you have time to research and PLAN your work. CANVASES will NEED to be done on your own time. ALSO – REMEMBER THAT the IMAGERY is YOUR OWN IMAGERY! It HAS to be YOURS.
Critique Day! Let’s Self – Assess and then TALK!

Intro to Digital Art: Portraits in PhotoShop

How did you capture the image?
https://2dhnizrxqvv1awj231eodql1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Creative-Self-Portraits-Shadows.jpg
  • G: 1.1Ac: Individually or collaboratively formulate new creative problems based on studentโ€™s existing artwork.
  • A: What are the qualities of the portraits that you think about when you see them? What types of portraits are you thinking about for yourself when you want a portrait made? Have you even begun to think about what you are going to do with the background of the image to make a strong photograph (and then a strong drawing) of the photograph?

G: PORTRAITS: With a group of three, come up with 3 techniques, tools, approaches to a portrait that you as the model would like to work with for the image? As a group of three – you will 1) hold lighting, 2) Be the Photographer, and 3) be the model for the photograph. We will talk about the cameras for a brief bit in the beginning, then we will be heading down to the painting studio and then out into the building with cameras and lights for 30 minutes (that is 10 minutes per person… so be thinking about the process and the poses that you might want.) Take 5 minutes NOW to look over PORTRAITS in Google to begin to THINK of ideas… you will be using these ideas as IDEAS. Have your sketchbook ready to make notes and quick sketches of the ideas. We will be using an 10โ€ x 8โ€ format at 300ppi.

ALSO – When this work of art is DONE (3 class periods) we will  begin to illustrate NOT from a photograph, but from our own drawings, gathering of images, our own ideas. Illustration of another work of art – LITERATURE!

How far can you take the DIGITAL END of it? https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KQEQbaoogd5ZCWuNyWcARC-320-80.jpg

Advanced Digital Art: We Critique and Turn this into a Google Slideshow!

  • G: 4.2Ad: Critique, justify, and present choices in the process of analyzing, selecting, curating, and presenting artwork for a specific exhibit or event.
  • A: Today we TALK about the images we have. TURN THEM INTO CLASSROOM as a Photoshop Image and then INSERT them into the GOOGLE SLIDESHOW as a JPEG. Name at the top of the SLIDE and then we CRITIQUE! 10 minutes to do those 2 things – GO!
  • G: What do you take away from the critique today? What SKILLS have you learned about / techniques / approaches from looking at the work of your studiomates? Next time – we learn more about ourselves and create a page layout and magazine cover about US!
