52 Every color has an opposite, called a complement. Complementary colors sit opposite one another in the color wheel. Additionally, all colors are affected by the presence of other colors. Even the smallest presence of a complement will enhance the intensity of a color when it is present in the same visual field. The presence of red, for instance, will cause the retina to “seek” green in the other colors present, hereby enhancing all parts of the green spectrum. If you wish to intensify a color in a composition, place some of its complement nearby. This applies to all media. The effective use of color is one of the greatest tools at an artist’s disposal. Kit White 101 Things to Learn in Art School.

#Handbook #Updated for 2016-17 – FINALLY!

Handbook Cover

Arts Educators! Here is my day to day handbook that is going to press tomorrow – I hope. The new and updated 2016 – 17 Interactive Handbook for the Arts (I already see a typo on the cover – title change before too long). I am looking forward to a new approach to the day to day activities – although QUESTIONS and IDEAS are always going to be a part of the working process of the studio. I look forward to hearing thoughts and ideas about the ideas I’ve come up with, use in the studio, embed in the minds of the artists, and share from others thoughts. Special thanks to Dan Gross for the printing efforts – I am printing it at 8.5″ x 5.5″ and folding it in half with a saddle stitch in the middle – looks great! This handbook has, surprisingly, taken me the best part of the summer to get reworked and I am, at this point, please with what it looks like. http:goo.gl/ekrZ48 is the link to the shared folder – enjoy!

Kids will say the Darndest Things…

Knowing that sketchbooks and goals will ALWAYS be part of the courses, what is one suggestion that you have to offer for future classes? What are some suggestions you may have to help the class become even stronger or more fulfilling than it already is? These require explanation please.

  • “Make the goals so that everyone does them and doesn’t slack. It helps my brain learn from the beginning of class and I know it will help others.”
  • “To take the goals and understand them not just write them down.”
  • “The goals were kind of hard to understand when looking back at them. It’s easy to understand when you explain. but the way they are written down is tricky to look back at.”
