Welcome To Fort Atkinson High School’s ART STUDIO (one of many) FRESHMEN!

It is SO GREAT to have you here today at the start of the 2022 – 2023 school year! (I can hardly accept that those are real years.) This is going to be a spectacular year for ART MAKING, LEARNING ABOUT ART, SEEING OTHER’S ART (and all that other academic stuff…).

  • What questions about ANYTHING do you have about our art class?
  • HOW can I help you feel ready for the year in our studio space?
  • What are your initial CONCERNS or FEARS about your time in this studio?
  • What SKILLS and SUCCESSES are you bringing to the class?

Take these answers and thoughts and share them with your NEW STUDIOMATE!

Look at ONE of the questions that your partner answered and then Let’s share some thoughts in the 10 minutes we have together (if we have time).

Welcome to the Fort Atkinson High School Art Studio!

Welcome to MY art studio.

WELCOME to a NEW SCHOOL YEAR! 2022 – 2023

I can hardly believe those are real numbers for years. Where has all the time gone? This begins my 28th year as an educator… almost half my life in a classroom (on the other side of the desk from the students). More years teaching than as a learner (although I am always learning). I look forward to new artists, new artworks, and new experiences. This is going to be a GREAT year.

Here is a quiet little view of my studio so that you can all see where I work as an artist. Enjoy the visit. If you are interested in seeing my artworks, visit http://www.FrankKorb.com.

Mr. Korb

Let’s Talk About the POSITIVE for a moment – and then we can consider the NEGATIVE

What is positive in your life right now? What is negative?

What is the POSITIVE SPACE in this print by American Artist JASPER JOHNS?

What is the NEGATIVE SPACE?

Go out and get a BRANCH from the ground (or two) and let’s look a little deeper into the IDEAS of the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE spaces we all interact with (and more often than not) often miss. CLICK HERE for your activity!

Enjoy!

It’s the END OF THE YEAR as we know it… and I feel fine.

Thank you to EVERYONE for working so hard and focused at becoming stronger and stronger artists. I know that I can challenge you to really think about the work you are making. Challenge you with techniques and ideas that are a little outside of your comfort zone. Push the ideas of self reflection and assessment until you are to the point of wanting to just make “pretty pictures.” But these are things we do as artists. SO… GREAT JOB!

Today we made EXQUISITE CORPSES. Below are out images from the day and below that is the video that started us off from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Thanks again and enjoy the art and the summer!

Assignment from the Museum of Modern Art! Exquisite Corpse!

Thank you Artists. Thank you all for a great year. This is the end for the year so… what will the future hold?

While I have tried to teach you many techniques and ideas and rules… these are 10 that I personally feel are ESSENTIAL to put into your practice. Thank you Sister Mary Corita Kent for the guidance.

We are going to CRITIQUE and REFLECT and SURVEY in all the classes. I hope that this final semester was fulfilling and productive for you all.

Please keep in mind the 7 parts of our standards and how you have been aware and practicing them. These are how we, as artists, continue to become stronger artists in our studios and our practices – no matter what we do are where they are.

  • Planning / Ideation
  • Concept
  • Technique
  • Composition
  • Craftsmanship
  • Studio Habits
  • Critique

Keep making art. Make art over the summer. Make art for yourself about yourself and about the things that are important to you. Thank you all.

Intro to Digital Art: Survey and Clean your Drives.

We are OUT of FULL WEEKS OF SCHOOL. The 2021-2022 year is ALMOST OVER! Keep working and stay focused on the artmaking.

What can we say about the rest of the year. Below I will simply tell you what is on the horizon. That is all. Thank you for the INCREDIBLE WORK this year. The struggles in art are real BUT… it is all about showing up and getting the work done. Rule #7 is a FOCAL POINT of it ALL – The ONLY rule is WORK!

Advanced Painting: Figurative Work FINISH IT UP!

https://www.sothebys.com/en/slideshows/the-enduring-appeal-of-figurative-art-from-the-1940s-to-today

Make USE of the class period and studio time. Critique of one work on Thursday – the rest next week – and then we CLEAN!

Here is the ASSIGNMENT: Figurative Art!

Advanced Digital Art and Photography: Handbook Cover Design – then we finish the PHOTO BOOKS

HANDBOOK COVER – this week we are cranking up our working habits and pushing to a fast deadline – welcome to the world of graphic design and deadlines – HARD AND FAST DEADLINES.

It feels lik eMondrian made a huge impact on the DESIGN WORLD as well as the painting world.

HERE is the larger Photography Book assignment – Let’s talk about the process and the layout ideas.

Art Foundations: Collage (and Poetry)

We are beginning to work on our COLLAGES! This is a FUN activity that allows one to play with the SPACE and FORM in a way that is loose and free (or tight and specific). Let’s learn about Romare Bearden and Della Wells in the process.

Thank you Della Wells for filling the space with SO MUCH to look at and take in. Collage and CONTEXT!

Intro to Painting: HAND BOUND BOOKS!

The making of one’s own hand bound book can be a lot of fun and very rewarding so… be attentive to the process we are going to be teaching and work at making this a worthwhile project.

Watercolor or drawing paper is up to you.

Intro to Digital Art and Photography: MONEY comes next… I mean LOGO Design Comes Next!

LOGO Design is the final project. We are finishing this up and presenting on WEDNESDAY. What to do with the remainder of the year? We will find out soon.

Some online artist selling their fast and fast logos… It is NOT that easy… But good on them for making money and a living. Gotta hustle!

What FRUSTRATES me about the idea of ONLINE LOGO DESIGN services is that they make it seem so instant, so easy. The REAL design takes time and thought and introspection as well as revision and revision and revision… It takes an ARTIST to do the work. This is not STRONG logo design… your designs are!

We are getting CLOSE to the END… But we are NOT THERE YET! Do Not Lose Steam! Do Not Stop Making the BEST ART YOU CAN!

Advanced Painting: Figurative Work Continued

Just so you are aware… the process of the figurative work has taken a lot longer than anticipated and we are going to continue this through the rest of the term. The figure is HARD. The canvases we built were CHALLENGING and the ideas that you are communicating are PERSONAL.

Make USE of the class period and studio time.

NO EXCUSES!

Doron Langburg “Daniel Reading” 2019

Last week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast deals specifically with an exhibition about the figure and HERE IT IS! Remember that we are listening and seeing artwork that is dealing with contemporary issues and you are in the Advanced levels of making art.

We are not in LIVERPOOL but… look at how the Mondrian Approach can be used!

While we do not live in Liverpool, the ideas of a layout are consistent wherever you live. Are you working:

  • Type Heavy?
  • Silhouette?
  • Mondrian?
  • What other ideas are you playing with?
  • HERE is a link for the 10 Basic Ideas.

Watercolor or drawing paper is up to you.

Intro to Digital Art and Photography: MONEY comes next… I mean LOGO Design Comes Next!

Logo Design this week That is what we are doing. What are your initial sketches?

Let’s look at the ideas that Paul Rand has about the creation of a strong logo and continue from there.

Paul Rand’s most famous and lasting designs (some of them)
  • “A logo derives meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around.”
  • “The only mandate in logo design is that they be distinctive, memorable and clear.”
  • “Presentation is key.”
  • “Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.”

LOGO Design is next and we have a commission – this is a first. If you are interested in earning $40 – put your best foot forward (and I will try to get a little more out of the deal for 2nd and 3rd place).

Logo Design Assignment

Happy Monday (and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and Friday) of Art. Plein Air is in the air!

Advanced Painting: Figurative Work

What have you begun with the figurative work? This is the most challenging genre to work with – the figure. We all have one. We have all drawn / painted one. We know when things look right and we know when things look wrong. Make use of your time… we have about 5 sessions left with one another… make good use of the time.

Do you want something to listen to? This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast deals specifically with an exhibition about the figure and HERE IT IS! Remember that we are listening and seeing artwork that is dealing with contemporary issues and you are in the Advanced levels of making art.

Not Exactly a BOOK per say buy Marcel Duchamp went through the layout of miniature works of his in a similar fashion and created a BOX SET of these pieces. What do you see him having done to make sure the LAYOUT was unified throughout? And he DIDN’T have InDesign to work with.
