Where Does #MrKorb go all the time?

 

I’m in CHICAGO today with the AP Studio Artists and we are looking at THOUSANDS of artworks from all around the world. This gathering of Contemporary Art (maybe some Modern) is called Expo Chicago – the Mid-West’s largest and most important art show of the year. I hope you can make it down there this weekend to see the work. I’ll be back tomorrow – see you then.

SPECIAL NOTE: Today you are going to find an animal or flower ONLINE and use that image for an inside the ZENTANGLE design you started yesterday. Use the drawing you came up with yesterday and then combine it with a new animal or flower. I have examples that you will look at in a moment. This is going to become a COPPER PLATE BAS RELIEF drawing that will be worked up – you need to FOCUS. I am NOT WORRIED!

#Tuesday in the #ArtStudio and #MrKorb is nowhere to be found.

Generally speaking, when I am gone  – things run a lot faster and smoother in the art studio. I am not here to over-explain things. That said, I’ve included a couple of videos to help you get yourself on track. Studio Art 360 – the DEMO video is a GREAT one of dealing with a few examples – we will start out with our shoes and move on from there. Drawing: Still Life and the ROUGH Drawing

Express: Learning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling, or a personal meaning.

This is the DAY of ROUGHS. This is the day to spend the ENTIRE PERIOD working out the FINAL DRAWING idea as a large final idea drawing – full page of the sketchbook – 46 minutes of FOCUSED DRAWING. This drawing is COLLECTED at the end of the hour so I can look it over and give it some feedback. I hope you DRAW. We will have a demo tomorrow on  creating of the book pages with glue. How are you going to work this into your drawing? Thinking of the edges of the books? how are you defining the edges of forms DIFFERENTLY now than you have in the past? How are you thinking about the idea of COMPOSITION now that it has been spoken about?

2.1P: Engage in making a work of art or design without having a preconceived plan.

What do you feel is the value of practicing in a sketchbook? How can you see this as being a place that others (engineers, designers, architects, artists) might need as a valuable tool?

Sketchbook Assignment: Watch the video above to get a feel for the technique. As you draw – GO SLOWLY and work SILENTLY. Only let your hand move at the pace you eyes are travelling over the object (Shoe, Hand, Face…).

Sketchbook Assignment – Continuous Line Contour Drawings: We are going to use a single line to create observation based drawings of objects that we make use of and really think we understand. Start with your hand (4 minutes), then move onto your shoe (4 minutes), then using a mirror try your face (4 minutes), a volunteer of a classmate and their face – (4 minutes then SWITCH). If you want to do two sets of hands or two sets of shoes – go ahead. This sketchbook day WILL TAKE THE ENTIRE HOUR.

Open your HANDBOOK to page 10 and in the GREY BOX answer these questions: What were the BIGGEST Challenges and struggles you faced with this drawing? Were you able to work SLOW? I hope so. yo? Are you going to take it home and REFINE it?

4 Day Week with #SPARK day on #FRIDAY – Let’s #MakeArt until then.

We have another shortened week but it is a series of FULL DAYS. I will miss two of them for a conference and then a field trip. Sorry – not really but it’ll be great to see you work without me over your shoulders. Week one was good and I am getting to know who you all are – some more than others. Think about the CHARACTER that you are putting forth and how that is affecting your work.

Most young artists work with their FIRST idea and that’s it. What might the benefit be to begin with MORE ideas? When you sketch in your binders / homework… where do you mostly get your ideas from?  How do you define OBSERVATION?

Third Day in the #Studio and what have you got to show? LOTS!

Agnes Martin talks about the meaning of what art is, “Art is the concrete representation of our most subtle feelings.” In the first number of works ALL of our artists are completing we are working on the subtle feelings, the observation, the study of life… objects, lines, personal feelings and spaces. #MidWeek in the #Studio – but it’s only #Day2!

I hope that as we move along in the ART MAKING process – you are able to understand why we are creating what we are creating and how as artists we have gotten to the point we are at in contemporary art. The ideas at times seem simple but the ideas that they are based on are deep. Line, perspective, simple objects… all have a deeper history than simply the ideas of a high school art teacher working to help you push a pencil across paper. Studio Art 360: Lines are EVERYWHERE! What artists use LINE to create the work they do? Keith Haring. Sol LeWitt. Andy Warhol. David Hockney. Alice Neel. And SO MANY MORE. We are thinking about the line as a line however.

Meet in the Gallery Today. This is our LAST DAY together. 

I am without power so not able to post much as a web page today but here I go. Today we are meeting in the gallery and we will go out from there. Based on the condition of the river I highly recommend being cautious of painting close to it. We will end our day in the gallery hanging rest of our artworks and turning in all our supplies. It was a true pleasure working with each and everyone of you and I look forward to seeing you in my classes in the future. And bring a friend or two or three.
