A: Open your file up and put the sticky note in front of the opened image. Now.. walk around the room looking at the works you see in front of you. Take them all in. I will give you a number randomly and you will go to that work and write for 5 minutes all that you can that talks about the progress that is being made. Success? Struggle? WHY? Explain yourself. This might start like… Face down with your paper. Leave your sticky note number on the table as you are writing – I am going to collect it. NEW NUMBERS have now been given out… Take your NEW NUMBER and find that artwork. 4 minutes… what messages do you get / feelings do you get from the beginning of this work and the way the artist is using the techniques? Write out your thoughts on the paper in front of you and have evidence to back up your statement.

A: Today we are exploring the pace you are at with the portrait. This was HOMEWORK and I will be checking the work thus far. NAME ON THE BOTTOM of the paper – or top – or side… readable for sure. As I am walking around checking for completion of the contour line drawings, please get out your handbook and write out – week 7 – what were the areas that you were especially happy about and explain why. Where are you struggling in the process and explain why you are having a hard time… how did you resolve the issue? Today… we begin the value in the portrait. Today we add all of the types of mark making we studied in the first weeks. Look back and review the techniques… Where are you going to start? Remember to NOT START DARK! Build up to that. Also… do not just work in ONE AREA at a time – this will cause paralysis as one tends to get caught up in the small details and not think about the larger picture.

#17 Drawing is About Mark Making “Every mark has a distinct character and quality.Every mark is a signature. Variations in pressure and weight is the visual equivalent of intonation. Marks, or lines, of consistent weight or thickness surrounding a figure or object will flatten the image. Tapering or breaking a line in a curve can connote a highlight or make the curve flow. Also, a tentative line will read as such. Give every mark or line authority and make sure it serves a purpose. Literature is the basis and I have the literature to choose from – coming soon! I story today – I hope the books are here. I’ll hand things out to you on Friday to READ and begin drawing ideas from. Then – let’s each take a look at one of the artists in the link above – Brushes. You have been given a name to read about and then converse about. Then you will have 1 minute to share that artist with the class and give your thoughts… Ready – Set – GO!
Any questions about the work you have in front of you? Where are you going and what do you need to do to prepare or continue to move forward? Have you come prepared or is this all back burner and do it on the fly when you get into the studio? That’s a bad approach…

By the end of the presentation, you will know about the ideas and approaches our artists used to create the covers. You will begin to develop a sense of what the ideas are and how they best exemplify the ideas of the department.
REMEMBER THIS FOR FRIDAY:
A: When it comes to making AUTHENTIC Images? What do you enjoy making imagery of? You will look at 5 different professional digital artists who use the world of digital media to modify and edit their images and create research, an inspirational Google Presentation and use that to begin your fine art artwork in the realm of digital media. From here we are going to make authentic work – with the inspiration of the famous artists perhaps. DUE ON FRIDAY!5 different artists
3 images of each of their works
explanation (3 – 5 sentences) about each of the artists as to WHY you enjoy their works).
Figure or Portrait is a part of this project – you or someone you PERSONALLY KNOW.
PHOTOGRAPHS MUST BE OF YOUR OWN CREATION – plagiarism is not acceptable. (Side note: at what point is “sampling” of other’s works acceptable? If the image is transformed enough – removed enough from it’s original source and made into your image… then can it be considered yours? This is a difficult question to answer – but how does one deal with COLLAGE and MAGAZINES any differently than the world of digital? Curious question to ponder.)
Each artist has their own slide or series of slides in the presentation.
List of artists at the BEGINNING of the presentation – T.O.C.
Final Slide – YOUR THOUGHTS about where you are heading with the artwork.
What program(s) are you planning on using?
How will you include PHOTOGRAPHY? (Obvious and deliberate or resource and reference?)
G: Are there any questions about the designs that out artists can answer for you now? Thank you for your time.
It is IMPORTANT to consider the use of our Enrichment Time. Please make solid use of it as you all come into the studio to work – and do come into the studio to work – please.

Think about something that you feel requires attention – write out the aspect that needs work and also then write out the solutions that you feel will help create a successful work.
NOW we talk with one another and discuss what is happening. Write out your group’s thoughts about the progress and plans you have made.
G: At the end of the day, what have you gotten accomplished? Write out three things that you recognize as different techniques that you are experiencing in this work. What did the mid critique do to help you / hinder you in the learning?

A: When it comes to making AUTHENTIC Images? What do you enjoy making imagery of? You will look at 5 different professional digital artists who use the world of digital media to modify and edit their images and create research, an inspirational Google Presentation and use that to begin your fine art artwork in the realm of digital media. From here we are going to make authentic work – with the inspiration of the famous artists perhaps. DUE ON FRIDAY!
5 different artists
3 images of each of their works
explanation (3 – 5 sentences) about each of the artists as to WHY you enjoy their works).
Figure or Portrait is a part of this project – you or someone you PERSONALLY KNOW.
PHOTOGRAPHS MUST BE OF YOUR OWN CREATION – plagiarism is not acceptable
side note: at what point is “sampling” of other’s works acceptable? If the image is transformed enough – removed enough from it’s original source and made into your image… then can it be considered yours? This is a difficult question to answer – but how does one deal with COLLAGE and MAGAZINES any differently than the world of digital? Curious question to ponder.
