#NEWARTINTHESTUDIO… What are YOU doing with your studio time?

“The public is more familiar with bad design than good design. It is, in effect, conditioned to prefer bad design, because that is what it lives with. The new becomes threatening, the old reassuring.” Paul Rand

  • G: Develop Craft: Learning to use tools, materials, artistic conventions; and learning to care for tools, materials, and space.
  • A: Richard Diebenkorn (Ocean Park Series) is a good reference as we get things moving today. Simplification of space and shapes. Look for the larger areas first and then move into the smaller spaces. Nothing up close – BIG and HUGE spaces today. Pencil and Watercolors are the mediums of the day. Consider the sense of value contrast as well as the sense of color and shape. We’re looking at a bit of abstraction – this is a challenge.
  • G: Step back and see what you’ve done – quick end of class look at the entire body of work we’re creating so far.

  • G: 1.2Ac: Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic practices to plan works of art and design.
  • A: DAY 3: What Book / Story / Song have you brought in and thought about to use as your inspiration for this ILLUSTRATION in Photoshop? How did things go last time in the process of the DESIGN and BEGINNING of the illustration? MAKE SURE YOU ARE INVESTED in this work. OFTEN a book illustrator has ZERO investment in the book – one doesn’t have to like or dislike the story – but one does have to be able to be invested in the making of a successful image. Ok?
  • G: Looking over the process you have what have you accomplished today in the process of ILLUSTRATING the work of “LITERATURE.” How are you making strong artistic choices (look at the Artist Habits of Mind to make a reflection on here).
