#MakerFaire and #Stem – I prefer #STEAM – on Wednesday, June 18

MAKER FAIRE – June 18!

I am TORN… Technology Conference or Gather a group for a COMMUNITY MAKER event? Follow me on TWITTER @fjkorb to see what my decision is… I do NOT know what to do!

On June 18th, President Obama will host the first-ever White House Maker Faire, to highlight how the Maker Movement and the increasing access to the hardware and software tools it takes to make just about anything, are unleashing new learning opportunities for students and opening new pathways for kids to get interested in STEM. (Check out my students work based on STEAM HERE!)

The 18th will also be a National Day of Making, and we’re encouraging citizen makers around the country to get involved in their communities or plug in virtually using #NationOfMakers. Attached is more information on what you can do to celebrate making on June 18th.

 Follow the action online at http://www.whitehouse.gov/makerfaire.

 #NationOfMakers or via maker@ostp.gov.

 Maker Luncheon at the Technology Conference? Perhaps there is my answer!

 What can YOU do to promote the movement?

STEAM Education at Waterford Union High School

In two of our art classes, we have had the great opportunity to tie it ALL(most) together. Thanks to Ms. Lynn Neuman (math) and Mrs. Nancy Smith (Science) for their ideas and feedback.

Breanna A. – Science, English, and ART!

Art Foundations – Science / Engineering / Math / English and ART. They researched (flipped classroom of my videos) 2 point perspective (houses, buildings etc…) and learned the “rules.” Then they researched Scanning Electron Microscope images, we had a conversation about the results, they documented their sites, read a bit about it and then… they had to use the rules of perspective to interpret their microscopic image into and oil pastel drawing. Jessica's Bauhaus Drawing!
Jessica’s Bauhaus Drawing!

Drawing – Using the HISTORY of Germany and Russia in the early 1900’s – WWII, the students studied the times and ideas behind the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. They studied the MATH / GEOMETRY / COLOR theory behind his works and came up with their own color theory. THEN… Music was the emotional impetus for the work. They listened first to music by Kandinsky’s contemporaries and got the ideas for abstraction and geometry. From there they worked their OWN music into the art. So lets see… Music / history / math / social studies (history)… oh.. and ENGLISH – they had to write up an explanation – Artist Statement about their work. The collaborative efforts can be seen in this presentation they worked out and engineered through Google Presentation… some of it MAY still be in the works! http://goo.gl/Jz15AT

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

Art Foundations: Let your brain hurt as you SEARCH for Perspective

How to make this into a CUBE? http://blog.targethealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/20110822-2.jpg

Goals:

  1. 1.2 create art that demonstrates an understanding of how your ideas relate to the PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS 1.2.3 and processes / attempts / sketches you use
  2. 2.3 create artworks that solve visual challenges  using the THOUGHTS and IDEAS of 2 Point (or more) linear perspective.

What do you see as the most difficult part of the design and restructure of your image? What was your BIGGEST SUCCESS? What was the BIGGEST CHALLENGE you had?

Drawing: DRAW!

BAUHAUS or der Balue Reiter? http://assets.thecreatorsproject.com/blog_article_images/images/000/022/411/wassily-kandinsky-red_original.jpg

Goals:

  1. 1.1 apply Pencil and Oil Pastels in a variety of techniques, and processes with 1.1.1 skill and 1.1.3 and awareness so that your ideas about music, geometry, and color theory are executed well.

What three things did you find interesting about YOUR images and what three things did you find interesting about your neighbors? WRITE THESE OUT with the WHY’s in your end of week comments.

JWM Turner’s Sketchbook. http://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/work/D/D07/D07860_10.jpg

Goals:

  1. 3.5 evaluate and defend how 3.5.1 subject matter 3.5.2 symbols are used in art
  2. 2.6 create multiple solutions to visual challenges that show understanding in relationships between your concentration images and meaning of artwork

Thinking about the critiques from earlier this week, what are you in need of doing to make these  end of the concentration works the best? We still have TONS of time to POLISH our concentrations… what else do you do?

Multiple Solutions before you move forward – EVERYONE!

Art Foundations: Textbook and Chapter 5

WOW – How can we make this into a 2 point perspective drawing… let’s take a look! http://www.project-pharmaceutics.com/site/wp-content/uploads/electron-microscopy-analysis.jpg

Goals:

  1. 3.2 apply subjects, symbols, and ideas in art and use skill to solve visual challenges – What are you learning about 2 point perspective and how can you use it in your upcoming drawing.
  2. 2.6 create multiple solutions to the perspective challenges of a scanning electron microscope image. How can you show understanding in relationships between composition and meaning of artwork

What do you see as the most difficult part of the design and restructure of your image? What Is your image and WHY are you choosing it? What does the original do? Why is it built the way it is and how does that creation help it do what it does?

Drawing: Sketching / Drawing / Listening

Kandinsky – der Blaue Reiter or Bauhaus? The choice is yours. Explain your answer. http://www.neuegalerie.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/slideshow_large_image/mainimage.jpg

Goals:

  1. 3.1 reflect on how your art differs from Kandinsky’s and describe how it relates to the past and current time as well as past culture and your culture.
  2. 3.2 apply subjects, symbols, and ideas in art and use skill to solve visual challenges (how are you using MATH and PHILOSOPHY in the NEW works)

What NEW ideas might you have had about COLOR and SHAPE in the art you were creating? SHARE this with your classmates SO that you can practice the skills of talking about your ideas and work. I am seeing GROWTH in a NUMBER of you. Keep it up.

AP Studio Art: Concentration / Photographs

What can you do to fill these pages with NEW ideas that are GROWING from your past experiences? http://room13international.org/wp-content/themes/room13/assets/images/bg-sketchbook-open.jpg

Goals:

  1. 2.6 create multiple solutions to visual challenges that show understanding in relationships between composition and meaning of artwork

hat have you come up with? What materials are you planning on using? How does it fit into your current body of work?
