“Never tell a young person that anything cannot be done. God may have been waiting centuries for someone ignorant enough of the impossible to do that very thing.” — John Andrew Holmes

Drawing: Onto the LANDSCAPE and LINE / Mark Making Drawings

2.1Ac: Through experimentation, practice, and persistence, demonstrate acquisition of skills and knowledge in a chosen art form.

Look at ALL THREE drawings from yesterday. Of the 3, which one stands out as the STRONGEST? Which stands out as being the WEAKEST? WHY?

Translating the images from your PHOTOGRAPHS to the paper.

Get out the photographs and begin working on the drawing that has the most work to do. Start with a simple set of lines and then work towards more detail. Work for a variety of DISTINCT lines and VALUES. This is going to be about MARK MAKING.

Stand back from your one drawing and write out 3 things that you are PLEASED with and 1 thing you see that is NOT VERY STRONG

Out and About in Waterford

9.1P: Establish relevant criteria in order to evaluate a work of art or collection of works. This is it folks. Last day to make work about you and for you and all chosen by you. I hope that the weather has cooperated this week. Get yourself out there and get to work.

20170705_105451

End of the week and you have a small series of works that are all tied together. Name three things that you planned on doing to make this a series of works. How did you accomplish this idea that you set out to accomplish?

  • Anchor Standard 10: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
  • Enduring Understanding: Through art-making, people make meaning by investigating and developing awareness of perceptions, knowledge, and experiences.
  • Essential Question(s): How does engaging in creating art enrich people’s lives? How does making art attune people to their surroundings? How do people contribute to awareness and understanding of their lives and the lives of their communities through art-making?

Vicente at Taliesin in 2016. Plein Air field trip!

TODAY – June 20 (Happy Birthday Mr. Korb)

Develop Craft: Learning to use tools, materials, artistic conventions; and learning to care for tools, materials, and space.

Richard Diebenkorn (Ocean Park Series) is a good reference as we get things moving today. Simplification of space and shapes. Look for the larger areas first and then move into the smaller spaces. Nothing up close – BIG and HUGE spaces today. Pencil and Watercolors and then Oil Pastels (and Conté) are the mediums of the day. Consider the sense of value contrast as well as the sense of color and shape. We’re looking at a bit of abstraction – this is a challenge.

Richard Diebenkorn, Ocean Park Series: http://www.ocma.net/sites/default/files//Diebenkorn_Ocean%20Park%20105_3.jpg

Sketching out ideas and SIMPLIFY the space. Today we DO NOT WORRY about any sense of ACCURACY and only look at the larger shapes and colors. Start there.

Step back and see what you’ve done – quick end of class look at the entire body of work we’re creating so far. Are you EXPERIMENTING?

#Tuesday – Where does #MrKorb GO?

“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home” Twyla Tharp – Choreographer

Where are you hoping to run away to with your work?

Drawing: DRAW some NESTS!

2.1Ac: Through experimentation, practice, and persistence, demonstrate acquisition of skills and knowledge in a chosen art form.

What is your sense of OBSERVATION regarding the Bird’s nests? What is a quality of the nest that you could see as becoming an aspect of your drawing that would be worth your while to focus on during the next week or so? 3 – 5 thumbnails today – very focused – Look at your neighbors artwork as you move along.

WHAT TO DO? Pencil and observation. Drawing techniques and mark making. We are going to look specifically at LINE and VALUE / CONTRAST in these drawings. Whites / Blacks / Greys are the focus. Use of CHARCOAL will be coming up – mark making and removal of marks with erasers. Explore the use of the variety of Pencils that we have and how they can be used. Explore the different marks and erasing that we can do with the materials. Look at the different papers that are available. Really look at the idea of THE ELEMENTS and compositions that can be used.
