#17 Drawing is About Mark Making โEvery mark has a distinct character and quality.Every mark is a signature. Variations in pressure and weight is the visual equivalent of intonation. Marks, or lines, of consistent weight or thickness surrounding a figure or object will flatten the image. Tapering or breaking a line in a curve can connote a highlight or make the curve flow. Also, a tentative line will read as such. Give every mark or line authority and make sure it serves a purpose. Try to use only the marks you need.โ

Quote from his interview on “A Brush With” The Art Newspaper
Learn To Draw โDrawing is more than a tool for rendering and capturing likenesses. It is a language, with its own syntax, grammar, and urgency. Learning to draw is about learning to see. In this way, it is a metaphor for all art activity. Whatever its form, drawing transforms perception and thought into image and teaches us how to think with our eyes.โ

There is not a lot of new classroom stuff to say right now except that I am now a PROUD WILDCAT at Forest Park Middle School with the Franklin Public Schools in Franklin WI.
28 years ago I started teaching. 28 years. I met a mom at open house this past week who was a first grader when I started teaching at Forest Park – she was at one of the elementary buildings – but she remembered me! Maybe it was my red sneakers that she remembered. I also reconnected with many of my family and friends.
Unfortunately, I also had to say goodbye – a very tear filled day of goodbye to Fort Atkinson High School. The past five years were wonderful and I learned a lot and made so many connections that I hope are life long connections. Thank you Fort.
6th Grade: 4 sections
We will begin with DRAWING and 2 point perspective…
7th Grade: 4 sections

Photography perhaps? Let’s see what happens.
8th Grade Sculpture:
Hmmmmm… I am waiting for clay right now so… maybe clay.
While I do not know a lot about the newest of federal holidays, it is important to educate oneself. Thank you you everyone who has given me a bit of insight into the reason for and the refelction on the final days of slavery in America.
OK – Onto ART
KORB Pottery and Brady Street
This has been a busy summer already and the pottery and painting continue.
Korb Pottery had a space on Brady Street in Milwaukee and we had a great time sharing the mud with the folks who came by. I threw ONE piece all day and about 15 others had their hands on the wheel. Thank you to all who came by, shared the experience, and bought some work.
Waterford 7+ and CLAY
Onto Tuesday’s with the Waterford 7+… Last week we began our FLORAL MOTIFS and slab builds. We will take the paper copies and work on watercolors and the slabs will become bowls… eventually.
HERE is the slideshow that I will be working with my Special Needs Artists this summer – the few weeks at least.
@TroyMadeIt on Instagram makes art all the time. My favorite summer crew – The Waterford 7+ will truly appreciate him and all he does. They make and do and create just like him. This summer they are beginning with CLAY as well.

What did the year bring us? Here are some thoughts from some of our artists about 2022 – 2023 – Lots to look at and consider. I read them all and picked out a few gems… and some not so gem-like.
Assess yourself on the OVERALL quality of your techniques, craftsmanship, and composition (were you happy with the results of your final works?) in the final artworks you have created. Assess yourself on your completed and final works NOT your intention or concepts behind the work.
I try my best each day to improve my habit
I incorporated things such as color theory and texturizing to my painting. I took weeks of after school work to put minute details only i will ever remember and appreciate in the long run.
I was happy with a lot of my final works, I fell like many of them showed the techniques we learned in class and some techniques I picked up while working in the programs on my own.
I focus on making clean marks and I think I’m really strong at making fur textures. I also think I’m good at making compositions that are interesting. Such as the painting I am doing now, the tail acts as a line to draw your attention to the body of the cat.
I chose this for myself because I saw myself improving and learning techniques I never knew about. It helped me grow as a painter and it improved my paintings. I used this class to test out and learn about art and painting to become better than I did before. My artwork in the past was not bad but it shows how much I developed and changed into something better.
What do you consider your strengths in this class? Why?
I feel like my strengths were pushing myself, even if sometimes it didnโt always turn out how I wanted it to, or it was too much for me (like the chess animation. I also feel like I was good at staying focused in this class, which helped me dedicate my full attention to my projects.
Efficiency in working in the classroom, and using the techniques required. I do this because I want to improve my art skills and want to learn more about art and it’s history.
I think my strengths are making ideas and brainstorm what exactly I want to paint. When the project or assignment is being explained of its requirement, I already have a start on what I want to paint. I brainstorm it in my head and I usually stick to the one I think is unique and different. So, I never have struggled so much to know what to paint.
I feel like one of my strengths is sticking with an idea and following it through. I believe I have followed my ideas for all of my projects that I have done.
Using my time in class. I think the time in class (and even in ET) are the main reasons I’ve gotten all of my projects done. Time is given and it’s best to use the most of it.
What do you consider your weaknesses in this class? How could you improve on that?
I don’t really like showing my paintings or work because I don’t think they are good compared to others. I can work on this by not looking at the image itself but looking deeper, like at the techniques and the use of space and unity of the painting.
Staying focused for long periods of time. Maybe not having my phone in the room
Finding the motivation for a project for the first few days. I’ll ditz around a bit before finding the motivation (normally due to the ditzing). I think just focusing on topics and interests helps my motivation. I probably should focus on those aspects more for more projects so I don’t get burnt out.
I think that my weakness is perfectionism. I always get caught up one details that sometimes I overlook the bigger picture.
I think that my biggest weakness in this class is impatience and lack of fine motor coordination which I can only get through additional practice. In almost all of my projects my art did not look as good as I wanted it to because I attempted to take the easy way out or made a mistake that destroyed what I was going for.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned in class this year? How can you use that moving forward? (3 sentences)
I have learned how to use online programs to edit and photoshop them. this can help me if a family member needs something done. It can also help me strengthen my art.
technique is the biggest part of this class that i will use in the future. I didnt htink sand could be used to create such an amazing texture and i will being using it in paintings for personal use in the future
Not procrastinating. If you get behind itโs hard to get back. I think I can use this in college to get my work done better.
The most important thing I learned in this class is how to add texture to my paint, which could add a lot to the artwork. I didn’t even think about adding sand or anything to paint! It added a lot of detail to my abstract kitty piece, even though it was just one color. I’m glad that I used it.
Making canvases.
I’ve learned about under-paintings, even though i didn’t use them. I’ve also learned that texture matters a lot when i did the sand on my first acrylic painting. texture matters a lot and i will use that moving forward because it adds a lot more meaning to the painting.
What is the biggest thing you need to change moving forward? Why? How can you change that? (3 sentences)
I think I need to change my perception of art. One thing I really struggled with was seeing art that didn’t look that difficult being really famous. I think I will just keep a more open mindset to unusual things.
Being on my phone and my drawing. I have been better and what i do is pick a playlist and then turn my phone upside down so i don’t see the screen. if i practice more i will be able to improve my drawing especially when it comes to people.
Not thinking that my painting is good. Because it is my painting and I am the one who gets to do what I want with that painting. By really focusing on my own painting, not getting distracted by others paintings.
As I mentioned above, I found it hard to enjoy the class because I don’t enjoy painting. The thing I need to change is the way I look at it. Even if I don’t enjoy it, at least I can practice. I think it’s very important to enjoy all your classes as much as you can.
i need to change how i use my studio time. i need to change it because i dont use all my time as best i can and end up rushing myself. i can change this by not being on my phone and not messing around and talking.
I think the biggest thing to change is finding my own art style. Because I am so amazed how many other people have their own techniques and painting style. I will have to experiment the different artstyle and which one I enjoy most doing it.
Thoughts about class with Mr. Korb
Your fun but also a little bit weird in a good way
Because Mr. Korb is really attentive to the whole class. He goes around asking about the students paintings. Asking them if they feel good about them. He also gives lots of good constructive criticism. And doesn’t favor any one student over the other. ( or at least he doesn’t shoe it)
Mr. Korb is very kind and I enjoyed having him as a teacher. I enjoyed that we are able to talk during class as long as we get work done. It’s always so lively in class and I really enjoy that.
To much of a cornball
because mr korb is a good teacher and he helps me improve my paintings better. he helped me get through the class, and my paintings have more detail and meaning because he helped me with it.

And the kiddo that wasn’t so thrilled with me… That’s ok… we do hard things in Art Studio and well… you did just fine. I hope that someday you can find another place for an art studio in your life.
I donโt really like art class enymore
I donโt like the class so I canโt really put interest in most works
As a teacher good job you can teach art but I just couldnโt find I way to respect you very much
Just try to understand that people have a life and sometimes art isnโt the main priority
STUDENT SURVEY is HERE – If you are NOT a student – thanks for ignoring it… unless you have some incredibly nice things to say or suggestions to make.

Advanced Painting: Narrative Painting with RULES!
Last days to paint in OILS! Let’s get this painting DONE!
Amedeo Modigliani – Jeanne Hebuterne, 1919 – Copyright reserved by the Met – used under creative commons for educational use only.
PORTRAIT and STILL LIFE : These terms are STILL here because they are important to know as genres and they are still not being fully understood. You have heard about them and you have listened to the definitions and you are still falling short (in some cases) on the demonstration of understanding. This is the time to fall short. Learning is the process.
Art Foundations: METALS and COLLAGE
Collage and Metals are the LAST Artworks. Metals should be wrapped up straight away at the beginning of the week with a ONE ON ONE crit! Assessed right away.
Collage Assignment is HERE as well. This is a GOOD in between waiting project as well… or a big project in and of itself… let’s see how things play out.
Advanced Digital art and Photography: Photography and Photoshop
We have modified and simplified the assignment a bit. The time just got away from us.

What’s the surgeon general have to say about social media and kiddos? It falls in line with my frustrations about the cell phones in class. Maybe it’s worth a read.
If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery. It wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all. โ Michelangelo
Advanced Painting: Narrative Painting with RULES!
What do you need to do this week to make HUGE PROGRESS in the final work of your Advanced Painting Experience? The assignment is FIGURATIVE PAINTING remember and you are making stories in the work. You have SYMBOLS and IMAGERY that stands for and represents a lot of stuff.
PORTRAIT and STILL LIFE : These terms will be here because they are important to know as genres and they are still not being fully understood. You have heard about them and you have listened to the definitions and you are still falling short (in some cases) on the demonstration of understanding. This is the time to fall short. Art Foundations: METALS and COLLAGE
Collage is a really important part of the art tradition and we do not have the time to fully do it justice. Please continue to work on the collages as you are waiting for metals supplies to free up and you can work on the jewelry project. This is your opportunity to make an artwork (again) about something important to you!
NATURE is the motif and you are all working towards an understanding of techniques. Black and white images are the final goal for the metals work and the nature will show through. Know about the techniques and LISTEN to the process so that we can have success in it all.

Advanced Digital art and Photography: Book Making and InDesign
We will take a look at the larger idea in the assignment and then leave it up to you to decide how you want to go about making a series of works and inserting them into a BOOK! The process is complicated and you are in need of focus and attention to the time. Studio habits are essential and I know that you have got the skills. Day 1 is an in depth dive into InDesign, the rest is on you.
Introduction to Digital Art and Photography: Animation on your own.
Animation – What are your plans for this? We have learned a little about the process in Adobe Animate and NOW is the time to really see what we can do. Look at the ideas that we have seen in the television intros from last week and see how you might consider your ideas and interests in this work. What kind of animation do you want to attempt?
CELL PHONES: I am tired of them being the source of distraction. Put them away in your backpacks or somewhere you will not reach for them. If it is the course of work time and you need to make a photograph or listen to music – FINE. No social media or other distractions though… it has really cut into the time.

What are you doing in the final painting that is telling a story? How are you finding ways to attain all the goals and requirements that have been set up? What do you find the most challenging in this work? This is it folks – we have worked hard to learn new materials and refresh our memories on previously learned tasks… what are you doing to make the most of it?
