Week 4 – STUDIO HABITS should ALWAYS be at the front of your mind as you come in and make art… How are your STUDIO HABITS?

Learn To Draw โ€œDrawing is more than a tool for rendering and capturing likenesses. It is a language, with its own syntax, grammar, and urgency. Learning to draw is about learning to see. In this way, it is a metaphor for all art activity. Whatever its form, drawing transforms perception and thought into image and teaches us how to think with our eyes.โ€ 101 Things to Learn in Art School Kit White ยฉ 2011 Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Kit White

Our classes begin in Google Classroom AND from the lesson plans below. PLEASE feel free to visit the day to day and see what we are working on in the studio. The links will take you to the Table of Contents… find the current week to see what we are doing.

Week 3 – We are now in the thick of the art making process… how are you doing on a DAILY BASIS in the Art Studio?

โ€œGo and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here. Make. Good. Art.โ€ ~ Neil Gaiman

“As IMPORTANT as MAKING mistakes is, it is equally important to LEARN from those mistakes” – Frank Korb

We are going to look at Daily and Weekly Studio Habits as a formative and perhaps summative assessment. How one works in the studio has a huge affect on how they make their art and you are going to be aware and knowledgeable of your studio choices.

Let us leave the Studio Habits of Mind up here for ONE MORE week – who has looked at them? Comment on them in YouTube for extra STUDIO HABITS POINTS – only in my head…

SO MUCH TO DO and so little time to do it… Let’s Make Art!

I can use different styles of communication to express thoughts and ideas, negotiate conflicts, and resolve disagreements.

โ€œAll art is quite useless.โ€ โ€” Oscar Wilde: Art isnโ€™t utilitarian, and if it is, perhaps it isnโ€™t art. Art serves a non-practical role in our lives, but that does not mean that it is not vital or necessary. Oneโ€™s individual identity and our collective identity as a culture have no clear serviceability, but they are critical to our ability to function as a society. WELCOME BACK and HAPPY NEW YEAR! The break was SO NEEDED and now we are in the final throws of the semester. Let’s finish up with ENERGY!

Assessment is HUGE this week: I can listen to and respond appropriately when receiving constructive feedback from others.

โ€œThere are three responses to a piece of design โ€“ yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.โ€ Milton Glaser

The Winter Break is ALMOST UPON US… AND… we still have a lot of art to work on. LET US STAY FOCUSED!

I can describe the importance of building relationships between diverse groups of people.

โ€œEach generation gets to reinvent art in its own image.โ€

Because art is an act of description, it is inevitable that what it describes will reflect every generationโ€™s bias of the moment. It is not a strict reflection of a time but an interpretation rendered in a language that is always in a state of transformation. Kit White ยฉ 2011 Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Kit White

We are working in all of our studios this week. I have no images to upload to inspire you with this week… In fact… this is a week where it is all going to happen in the classroom. Please be aware that we are working hard and sometimes, after MANY YEARS of regular and consistent posts, things need to be set aside. KNOW that the week is planned (and you can see that in the links) AND nothing else is happening as I write this.

I spent HOURS in my own studio today and… this is part of me being an artist and taking care of me. Thanks.

We are emptying cabinets and handing back work today! Be ready to take your work home. Thanks.

6th Grade: 1 Point Perspective – The CRITIQUE and GLAZING!

This looks a lot like the KORB POTTERY glaze selection – not quite but close.

We are ASSESSING the One Point Perspective Paintings this week and THEN we are GLAZING OUR BOXES – Finally.

7th Grade: Photography

Time to wrap up the SCAVENGER HUNT and then getting into the PORTRAITS, LANDSCAPES, and FOODIE PHOTOS

8th Grade 2D Design: Digital Art and Photoshop

Be patient as will I. These computers are good AND they take some time to work with SO… LET US BE EXTRA PATIENT WITH ONE ANOTHER and work through this FIRE together.

8th Grade Sculpture: GLAZING – Finally

We are going to spend about a week and do the glazing, fire, clean things up, and then assess the work. Make sure you keep the glaze off the bottom. We have to have the bottoms cleanly sponged off so that they do NOT stick to the kiln shelves.

Welcome back artists! Let’s get to work!

#51: Learn the basic principles of color. There are three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. They are the building blocks of all other colors. The secondary colors are violet (blue and red), green (blue and yellow), and orange (red and yellow). They are composed by the equal mixture of two primaries. All other colors are referred to as tertiary, because they are mixtures of a primary and a secondary color. Kit White 101 Things to Learn in Art School

6th Grade: 1 Point Perspective – THE FINAL PAINTING

I’m going to leave this up here and talk about it this week. Know artists, that what we do in the 6th grade studio is what artists in the professional studio do as well… you are just at a different time in the career.

Here is what you can do with perspective as you continue to work as an artist. Pontone Gallery – London. Hwang Seonate – Korean Artist – One and Two Point Perspective Artworks / Lightboxes. Letโ€™s take a lookโ€ฆ Click on the image and letโ€™s see what happens in the the ART WORLD TODAY with perspective artwork.

You are adding watercolors to your 1 Point Perspective Drawings – TAKE YOUR TIME and BE CAREFUL in your painting techniques.

Watercolor Techniques and Experiments – I will offer this to you more than in 6th grade – but we will not be doing it all…

A long time ago… 10 years?

Additional Worksheet Examples are HERE if you want to learn more about 1 point perspective.

7th Grade: Photography

When you think of PHOTOGRAPHYโ€ฆ what are 3 things that come to mind?

We are going to look at the cameras that we have in the department as well as the cameras that you have in your hands always. There are some skills that we are going to be working on that are different than what you use on a daily basis AND when you start thinking about the new techniques – you will make stronger photographs for yourself as well.

8th Grade 2D Design: Digital Art and Photoshop

What do you know about Adobe Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is a professional program that we are going to begin to explore. BE patient and PAY ATTENTION to the instructions. This is challenging and can be a lot of fun as well.

Here’s another way to do this… our instructions might be different.

8th Grade Sculpture: GLAZING – Finally

What is it you know about the positives and negatives of glazing?

We are going to spend about a week and do the glazing, fire, clean things up, and then assess the work.
