Today and Monday, January 9, the WUHS Choirs – directed by Mr. Derek Machan, will be performing a series of 13 musical numbers, all part of “The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace.” Mr. Machan asked the Advanced Placement Studio Artists to contribute a visual interpretation to the musical work. The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace: Visual Interpretations in 13 Parts

Inspired by the musical work The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace by Carl Jenkins, the Advanced Placement Studio Artists created works to illustrate and represent the 13 movements of the musical work. Each artist carefully listened to and read about many of the various movements of the mass and chose their own movement based on their personal response to the piece. Through many preliminary drawings, trial and error, success and failures, a final work of art was developed to represent the feelings, ideas, and images that came to the artist’s mind as they listened and read about the particular movement. Individuality is clearly seen in the inspired works and various technical approaches can be seen with the unique approaches each artist took. From the Impressionistic approach by Anita Blatnik, to the Expressionism presented by Evan Campbell, the Symbolism of Staci Dieball or Realism by Cheyenne Gilles, the varied approaches demonstrate the infinite possibilities that an artist can create. The works presented to you this evening are companion pieces to the musical work by Jenkins.
