Textures

So you are looking to have a specific texture in an artwork? Why not go ahead and make one! Here are three different approaches to the challenge. Have fun and be creative with your approaches. If you are interested in artworks that are created through these different methods – look up Max Ernst the Surrealist for examples of great textures in his collages and other artworks.

Frottage: designs and textural effects created by placing paper over objects that have raised surfaces and rubbing the paper with graphite, crayon, wax, or other drawing material.

Grattage: Wet paint is scratched into with a variety of tools such as forks, razors, backs of paint brushes, or other tools.

Decalcomania: Paint is forced into random textured patterns. Paint is then placed between two grounds (paper, canvas, cardboard…) and then the two grounds are pulled apart.
