Week 1: Welcome to Semester 2 – WOW! That first 18 weeks FLEW!

Welcome back to a new semester. As you read before, I am going to work to make this a launching pad for the weeks. I hope it all goes well!

6th Grade: Photography and the Camp Snap Camera!

Here are the 6th grade semester Lesson Plans for you to see what our day will look like.

What is the last strong PHOTOGRAPH you made? I mean PHOTOGRAPH! Do not consider snapshots and selfies as photographs? We are going to be REALLY thinking about the idea of making photographs and framing things up properly. We are ALSO going to be using some fun Camp Snap cameras. What’s that? Look them up!

Week 18: Pneumonia is a BAD WAY to be sick. Avoid it!

I missed us last week as I was recovering from a back case of pneumonia. PLEASE stay healthy. I am back on track and pushing the studio kids hard this week. 2 more days – YIKES! Unfortunately – I need to keep THIS post short and sweet. NEXT semester – back to it and see how it goes!

7th Grade: PAPER MACHE MASKS – PAINTING

Here are the 7th grade semester Lesson Plans for you to see what our day will look like.

This is the assignment for the Paper Mache Masks.

Not one of ours, but take a look at the cleanliness of the work by this artist. Their paper is tightly glued down and the edges are nice and crisp. The eye holes are a bit larger than they might need to be. This is a good goal to shoot for.

  • Finish the Paper Mache Layers
  • Think about and look back on your planning of the colors.
  • OH – and we have to GLAZE our Kiln-Guardians too… That will PROBABLY take precedence over the masks for a couple of days.

Here are the 8th Grade Sculpture semester Lesson Plans for you to see what our day will look like.

ALEXANDER CALDER SCULPTURE ASSIGNMENT HERE – A 180 degree turn!

What will your work look like coming out of the kiln? A lot of works have already been removed – your work might still be waiting.

  • Photograph and Assess
  • Learn about Alexander Calder and the Stabile – think about the use of the plaster bandages we have and and plaster sculptures (designed around kids your age when he first started).
  • Planning and designing and making your Sculptures. Each one takes ONE DAY and then a day to repair. You are responsible for the process and the doing. I hope it works! Watch the process.

We are doing a lot of different printing. As 6th graders, it is a bit simpler than how others make prints… Mary Cassatt was a phenomenal print maker and the one American in the French Impressionist movement.

    This was a DAY WITH GLASSES and a strong time in my painting years… COVID and QUARANTINE too. I LOVE the Studio Habits as an artist and work to instill them in to the hands of the kiddo’s I work with. What are YOUR studio Habits?

      One of the BIGGEST CHALLENGES I see with 8th graders and your understanding of what art is and what it can be is that you don not have a wide view of the world of the arts. The IMAGE, the PICTURE has to be something and it has to be correct (in many of the 8th graders eyes) and sometimes it can be and should be about the mark making… the act of making art. Sol Le Witt nailed this!

      Week 12 – New Works are coming our way!
