One of the BIGGEST CHALLENGES I see with 8th graders and your understanding of what art is and what it can be is that you don not have a wide view of the world of the arts. The IMAGE, the PICTURE has to be something and it has to be correct (in many of the 8th graders eyes) and sometimes it can be and should be about the mark making… the act of making art. Sol Le Witt nailed this!

      • How did you use your time in the studio to the best of your ability to make the best work you could possibly do?

      • What are three things about the hand sculpture that demonstrate this?

Week 12 – New Works are coming our way!

A day at Expo Chicago brought back a great number of images and ideas… here is one image and then a quote from a different artist. I wish I’d have seen the name of the artist above.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter if the story is precisely trueโ€ฆitโ€™s about you telling the story. Itโ€™s almost like going to a rock concert where the audience sings along with the performer. I want the viewerโ€™s experiences to be echoed in the work as they are reflected back in the canvases.โ€

AP STUDIO ART… Hands holding an object.ย

The AP Studio Artists are working on their breadth in Studio. Concentration of one’s visual ideas is a part of the Advanced Placement process / portfolio, but so is the idea that “I can do a lot of different works and here are my skills.” Here are some of their skills. Check out theย galleryย link to see more of the works.

Reflect: Learning to think and talk with others about an aspect of oneโ€™s work or working process, and learning to judge oneโ€™s own work and working process and the work of others.

How have you changed in the process since you have begun? How are you drawing DIFFERENTLY than you did PRIOR to this Drawing?

Studio Art 360:ย Continuous Line Contour Drawings

2.1P: Engage in making a work of art or design without having a preconceived plan.

Sketchbook Assignment Line: Continuous Line Contour Drawings: We are going to use a single line to create observation based drawings of objects that we make use of and really think we understand. Letโ€™s begin with a BLIND continuous line contour drawing. Volunteers anyone? From there… your hands, shoe, and maybe a face if you are REALLY brave.

AT LEAST 5 drawings – all new pages in your sketchbook – 3 hands – 2 shoes – one face (at the very least). Let’s take 5 minutes for each drawing… Draw for as long as I have given you. If you have 5 minutes, draw for 5 minutes. If you think you are drawing too slow, draw SLOWER. There will be no time left at the end of the hour. BETWEEN EACH DRAWING – Walk around and look at all your classmates drawings.

Advanced Drawing: Begin with Fast Food

2.1Ac: Through experimentation, practice, and persistence, demonstrate acquisition of skills and knowledge in a chosen art form.

Looking over your ideas from yesterday – which ONE stands out as successful and WHY? What type of composition (looking at the handout from today) would you say it is most like?

3.1Ad: Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.

As you get your photographs back – what NEW materials are ย you thinking about using? Are you going to try and use the techniques that you are already comfortable with? What are you doing to EXPAND and EXPLORE?
